Apple announces iMessage, new BBM-like messaging app for iOS 5

In addition to Apple’s new Notification Center that it added to its newest iOS update, Apple also announced a new messaging app today during its WWDC keynote. iMessage was created to make messaging between iOS devices even easier. Like Facetime, you can only use it with other iOS 5 users.
The new app works with text messages, photos, videos, contacts, and group messaging. Messages also get pushed to all of your iOS 5 devices, meaning you can start a conversation on your iPhone and continue it on your iPad. It supports iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

iMessages features delivery receipts, and optional read receipts. You can also enable typing notifications so you can see if someone is typing. This is basically Apple’s version of RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger, and it may be the catalyst for some BlackBerry users to switch over to an iPhone.

When you get a message, it will appear in the handy new Notifications Center, allowing you to continue doing whatever it was you were doing without one of those annoying pop-ups showing up in the middle of your screen notifying you of a new message. The messages travel over Wi-Fi and 3G, and the transmission is also encrypted.
